Multisectoral organizations held an indignation mobilization led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in the House of Representatives, South Gate in support of the 2nd impeachment filing against Vice President Sara Duterte.

According to Bayan’s statement, the Committee on Justice must address the people’s grievances in achieving accountability and allow the presentation of evidence instead of hastily junking the impeachment complaints. The aforementioned impeachment complaint was endorsed by Gabriela Women’s Partylist Rep. Sarah Elago, ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. Antonio Tinio, and Kabataan Partylist Rep. Renee Co.

Environmentalists stood in solidarity with the 2nd filing of an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. According to Niña Estelle of Panatang Luntian, one of the speakers in the aforementioned indignation mobilization, cases of repression against environmental defenders have remained significant under the administration of President Marcos Jr.

She said that the progress of justice under the current system remains slow. While our natural resources are being plundered by large corporations, and land sold for the fulfillment of their interest, it is our most pivotal sectors and communities who suffer. The wide-scale displacement of residents and the destruction of their livelihood, Estelle states, is a result of the neglect of government agencies to stand for the interests of the Filipino people.

Cathleen de Guzman from Kalikasan - People’s Network for the Environment, who is one of the major complainants from the environmental sector, states that the impeachment is the people’s way of extracting accountability from the corruption of VP Sara Duterte, pertaining to her utilization of over P125 million of the appropriated confidential funds in just 11 days.

David d’ Angelo, another complainant from the Green Party of the Philippines, also slammed the recent deceptive publicity campaign of VP Sara Duterte which portrayed her alleged environmentalist efforts. He also scrutinized the allocation of the government’s climate fund to infrastructure that is being utilized by corrupt officials for ‘pork.’

The Climate Change Network for Community-based Initiatives stands in solidarity with the impeachment complaint as there is no place for corruption in the achievement of climate justice. Our research work has covered in-depth the scale of the environmental damage caused by corruption and has met with the people whose lives are most vulnerable because of the political greed within our government institutions.

Despite the numerous environmental factors of natural calamities that have claimed scores of innocent lives, the root cause of senseless deaths during typhoon season is political greed that constantly misappropriates the funds from public coffers into the pockets of politicians. President Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte are the highest officials and the main perpetrators allowing the corruption to proliferate and it is only just that the people demand their impeachment.
