The Climate Change Network for Community-based Initiatives took part in the mobilization held on May 18, 2026 led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in the front gates of the Senate of the Philippines in support of the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

The mobilization was held simultaneously as the senate convened as an impeachment court days after former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III was ousted by the combined vote of the 13 senators from the majority bloc which installed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano into power.

The voting would also see the return of Sen. Bato Dela Rosa after 6 months of absence from office in which he admitted in an interview with veteran news anchor Jessica Soho that he was the 13th vote needed to oust former SP Sotto and that without his vote the majority would not hold the leadership position.

His return would also result in a senate lockdown in hopes of implementing an arrest warrant that was previously unsealed by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on May 11, 2026 but was secretly issued on November 6, 2025.

The warrant of arrest outlines his role as the co-perpetrator in the crimes against humanity committed by the former Duterte Administration’s “War on Drugs” which resulted in the deaths of no less than 32 individuals.

The political landscape of our nation has laid bare the dysfunctions of our system that has long corroded our democracy. The theatrics they utilize to deceive, manipulate, and placate the pulse of the people’s anger is no longer effective.

Now, more than ever, the people demand accountability and the commotion in our senate that transpired in the last week is a glaring example that our government institution no longer works for its people. It stands for the self-aggrandizing interests of the bureaucrat capitalists that currently sit in power.

We enjoin our wounded nation’s civil society in their calls for accountability and transparency. Moreover, we place great emphasis on holding to account those who bend the law for their own political and economic interests.

For far too long, the organizations of civil society have been caught in the crossfires of state repression despite their legitimacy. We are all witnesses to the most blatant example of corruption and still no one is held accountable.
